<slack1872> Hello, @myii just a question: do you push changes on formulas directly on `master` branch? It seems that those are not visible on my github notifications page.
-
onslack
<myii> @slack1872 Anything that is not affecting the formulas themselves (i.e. `ci`, maybe `docs`), I've been pushing direct to the formulas with `[skip ci]`, so that we get minimal disruption. I'm not sure why they don't show up on the notifications page.
-
onslack
<slack1872> Neither do I but it seems to be the case, I discovered this week-end some changes, on formulas I watch, and never got notifications, that's weird.
-
onslack
<slack1872> That's not critical if it's on ci/docs but it surprised me
-
onslack
<myii> This is a bit of a tough trade-off. Ideally, you want to go through the PR route for everything but it makes far too much noise/work when we're doing this across 50+ formulas.
-
onslack
<slack1872> I agree.
-
onslack
<myii> If you've got a suggestion, I open to hear it.
-
onslack
<myii> Perhaps I could at least post a message to the `wg` to inform everyone what's going on.
-
onslack
<slack1872> My only suggestion may be to first have a PR on `template-formula` with proposed changes to be propagated to all formulas. But I think you already do that for most changes. _(I'm less present now so I may have missed some PR)_
-
onslack
<myii> That's a useful idea. Actually, there is another way as well: I could stick to `[skip ci]` but still create all of the PRs. Then if we agree on the principal, I can use the GitHub API to merge all of the PRs without having to go to each one and hit merge manually. That way, there are still notifications for all formulas. A bit too much?
-
onslack
<myii> It depends if we want PRs everywhere or not.
-
onslack
<myii> (And notifications).
-
onslack
<slack1872> May be too much but can be tested. For me on `template-formula` is enough because I watch it but other people may not.
-
onslack
<myii> I reckon the `template-formula` is enough, as you've said.
-
onslack
<myii> I'll do that going forward for now. Thanks for highlighting that.
-
onslack
<slack1872> I'm open to hear other people's opinion.
-
onslack
<myii> OK, perhaps a message in the `wg` to get those opinions? Not everyone is here in Slack.
-
onslack
<myii> Will you do that or do you want me to do that?
-
onslack
<slack1872> I'll not be able to do it today, I have some urgent work to do.
-
onslack
<myii> OK, I'll do it a bit later.
-
onslack
<marnold> What is `wg`?
-
onslack
<myii> One of the groups available for SaltStack Formulas.
-
onslack
<marnold> Google group? IRC?
-
onslack
<myii> GitHub group. Are you in any of the groups there?
-
onslack
<marnold> Never heard of Github groups slightly_smiling_face
-
onslack
<marnold> Is it public?
-
onslack
<myii> No, I think all of the teams were set to be private. Let me check.
-
onslack
<myii> Sorry, I think they're all visible but I'm not sure if the content is accessible to all.
-
onslack
-
onslack
<marnold> 404
-
onslack
<myii> Would you like to be involved?
-
onslack
<marnold> I'd like to stay informed about significant changes in formulas that aren't mentioned here in Slack (or IRC), but I tend to avoid Github email notifications
-
onslack
<myii> You'd get GitHub notifications for messages in the team. Would that be OK?
-
onslack
<marnold> Sorry, that the thing I'd want to avoid slightly_smiling_face
-
onslack
<marnold> I prefer to watch Github repos through RSS
-
onslack
<myii> Could you suggest a method for announcing significant changes?
-
onslack
<marnold> Maybe it is possible to bridge private Github groups to this channel?
-
onslack
<myii> Bridging to Slack is outside of my control, we'd have to find out who could do that.
-
onslack
<myii> @marnold Following on from the discussion above, if all significant changes were being discussed in the `template-formula`, would that be a decent central location to refer back to?
-
onslack
<myii> Before we had the GitHub team setup, that's what we used to do, effectively.
-
onslack
<marnold> You mean the `template-formula` issues?
-
onslack
<myii> Probably the PRs mainly, but also the issue tracker.
-
onslack
<marnold> Yeah, issues/PRs in the `template-formula` repo would be fine!
-
onslack
<myii> So how would you interact with that specifically? RSS feeds?
-
onslack
<myii> (Trying to get an idea about how this would reach interested parties).
-
onslack
-
onslack
<marnold> Also there is a direct Github-Slack integration (see sep)
-
onslack
<marnold> Too noisy though
-
onslack
<myii> Right, I think one of the thoughts has been to avoid troubling people with too many notifications.
-
onslack
<marnold> I prefer to watch for new PRs/Issues through RSS and subscribe via Github to specific ones that I'm interested in
-
onslack
<myii> OK, I think the `template-formula` is the right place for the time being. Thanks for bringing this up.

bsabri
hello all
-
bsabri
quick question
-
bsabri
how to reboot the linux servers after upgrading kernel and execute other tasks using salt?
-
onslack
<myii> bsabri: This is the formulas room, you'll be better off asking in the main #salt room on Freenode.
-
bsabri
no one is answering in the main #salt room :(
